Kim Dotcom reveals Mega will offer 50GB of free storage, hopes to offer Megaupload data transfer

Kim Dotcom on Thursday used Twitter to reveal some interesting new tidbits in regards to his upcoming Mega service, which will be hosted at the New Zealand-based domain Mega.co.nz. Two days before the service is to go live, Doctom says he plans to offer 50GB of free storage to all members and is also working on bringing over users’ Megaupload files and data, but has so far run into legal issues.

The new information came in five tweets. Everyone likes free stuff, so let’s start with that one first. Here’s the announcement:

This is a huge amount of free storage. It’s easily more than the 2GB offered by Dropbox, the 5GB by Google Drive, or the 7GB from Microsoft’s SkyDrive.

Three of the tweets were focused on explaining how Dotcom and his team wanted to give premium status to former Megaupload premium users on Mega. Unfortunately, he says his lawyers told him that isn’t possible at this time, but they are “working on it.”

It’s not just user data that would be apparently transferred over. Dotcom tweeted that Mega was working with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) in court to give Megaupload users access to their files. The team of lawyers “will seek court permission” to make the transfer. If and when Dotcom gets legal approval, premium users will get their status and “more,” Doctom promises.

The last and most recent tweet is typical Kim Dotcom swagger promising a look at the future:

Mega will launch on January 20 during “a press conference like no other.” The US Department of Justice (DOJ) will of course be watching closely, especially given that it has referred to the Megaupload legal brouhaha as “among the largest criminal copyright cases ever.”

Azure Media Services opens to the public, helping developers deliver streaming video to any device

Today Microsoft announced the general availability of Azure Media Services, a new set of tools and analytics to help developers build massively scaling media delivery services involving real-time video. For example, Microsoft claims that “Last year several broadcasters used Windows Azure Media Services to stream the London 2012 Olympics.”

That in mind, Azure Media Services isn’t precisely new, but is instead now open for general use. Microsoft is offering a 90 day demo period to drive early adoption.

Happily, the product is relatively end-user agnostic, with the capability to stream to “HTML5, Flash, Silverlight, Windows 8, iPad, iPhone, Android, Xbox, Windows Phone and other clients” in several formats. In short, if you need to deliver video of any sort to any device, Microsoft wants you to use Azure to do so. For the listed platforms, Microsoft has SDKs and players ready to go, so developer strain should be minimal.

Azure a PaaS and IaaS cloud offering from Microsoft is rapidly becoming on of its crown jewels, as the company positions the tool in the middle of its ‘devices and services’ plan.

For a technical look at Azure Media Services, Microsoft’s Scott Gutherie has a graphical run-down here that is of good use. I’ll spare our non-technical readers the specifics. Key to the product is price, with Microsoft touting that it allows for “very cost effective” creation of media services.

Mega responds to security concerns with plans to let you change and reset your password

Mega on Tuesday responded to industry criticism that its security features are not up to snuff. The company largely dismissed most of the allegations, though it did concede in some areas and will make improvements, most notably by adding the ability to change and reset your password.

While Mega did not say when they will be added, it did promise the following features “in the near future”:

• A password change feature will re-encrypt the master key with your new password and update it on its servers.
• A password reset mechanism will allow you to log back into your account, with all files being unreadable. Now, if you have any pre-exported file keys, you can import them to regain access to those files. On top of that, you could ask your share peers to send you the share-specific keys, but that’s it – the remainder of your data appears as binary garbage until you remember your password.
• A feature that allows the user to add as much entropy manually as he or she sees fit before proceeding to the key generation.

These are both features that should have been included from the start. Currently, if you forget your password for Mega, you have no way to gain access to your files or folders, and if someone steals it, they can gain access to your files and folders while you are left helpless.

In the rest of its post, Mega underlined specific sections from articles by Ars Technica and Forbes.

Ars criticized the lack of password options, using block deduplication, as well as the fact that the key used to encrypt files and folders on the service is stored on Mega’s servers. The first Mega will address, while the third Mega doesn’t seem to care. The second resulted in this explanation:

Fact #1: Once this feature is activated, chunk MACs will indeed be stored on the server side, but they will of course be encrypted (and we will not use ECB!). Fact #2: MEGA indeed uses deduplication, but it does so based on the entire file post-encryption rather than on blocks pre-encryption. If the same file is uploaded twice, encrypted with the same random 128-bit key, only one copy is stored on the server. Or, if (and this is much more likely!) a file is copied between folders or user accounts through the file manager or the API, all copies point to the same physical file.

Forbes meanwhile focused on Mega’s other weaknesses, and how an attacker could potentially break in and gain access to your data, usually by finding weaknesses and then turning off encryption. The company has countered with a more detailed explanation on how its site is structured, including which content is being encrypted, checked, and how.

In the end, every system has weaknesses and can eventually be broken into. If you want to keep your data 100 percent secure, don’t upload it to the Internet.

That being said, if you do want to use Kim Dotcom’s service, make sure to use a unique password (not the same one you do on other services), and change it on a regular basis. This goes for every site on the World Wide Web, not just Mega.

With Kim Dotcom’s Me.ga plans scuppered, soon-to-relaunch Mega goes online at Mega.co.nz

After his dreams of a Me.ga domain were shot down by Gabon’s government, Kim Dotcom’s soon-to-relaunch Mega service has finally found its place online after the German confirmed that the Mega holding site is now live at New Zealand-based domain Mega.co.nz.

The site — which has been hosted on other domains over the past few weeks — offers an email sign-up to help users keep up with the latest news and launch of the service, while it also houses links and information for hosting partners, developers seeking APIs and financial investors.

Dotcom had previously planned to grab the nicely fitting Me.ga domain but that plan was scuppered last week when the Gabon government — which claims .ga domains within its Web jurisdiction — suspended the domain because it didn’t want its country to be associated with “pirates”. Furthermore, it offered to sell the URL to Universal.

Dotcom hit back at the move, suggesting that Gabon’s hand had been influenced by the US government — which is still processing a request to extradite him — however, as Dotcom said in his latest tweet, the new domain will be infinitely more secure and safe with the backing of authorities and the law in New Zealand.

Plenty of teasers relating to the relaunch of Megaupload and new music service Megabox have been circulated by Dotcom, formerly known as Schmitz. As well as video footage of Megabox — which hinted at a number of exclusive musicians — Dotcom has offered developers early access to the Megaupload API.

Dates of the relaunch have been moved around a bit but, after initially vowing to launch the service before the end of the year, Dotcom settled on a rescheduled but poignant date: January 20, the one year anniversary of the police raid on his mansion.

The raid — footage of which surfaced in August– caused much controversy.  Authorities were accused of acting heavy-handedly with many questioning why a helicopter packed with members of the ‘Elite Special Tactics Group’ was needed. Dotcom himself told of the excessive force, testifying that he was punched, kicked, kneed and otherwise treated unfairly during his arrest.

The raid may have been the flashpoint but it has certainty not been the only bungled operation of the campaign, which began when the US Department of Justice shut Megaupload down in January.

Authorities suffered a significant blow in June when the New Zealand high court ruled that search warrants for the raid were invalid. That was followed by another embarrassing episode in September, when New Zealand Prime Minister John Key ordered an inquiry into claims that the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) unlawfully spied on the Megaupload founder.

The Dotcom extradition hearing is set to take place in March 2013 after being rescheduled from August 2012 following a series of issues relating to the way that police had handled the case.

CCleaner 3.27 adds support for Internet Explorer Metro in Windows 8

Piriform has released CCleaner 3.27, a minor update for its popular Windows free cleaning tool. CCleaner 3.27, also available in portable form, basically adds updates for major new browser releases, including support for Internet Explorer Metro in Windows 8.

The release is joined by Speccy 1.20, a minor update of Piriform’s system information tool, which adds version number detection for a number of major apps.

The key improvements in CCleaner 3.27 are aimed at improving support for Windows 8 users. Version 3.27 adds support for cleaning both the cache and history in Internet Explorer Metro, the full-screen app found in the Windows 8 Modern UI.

The update also adds support for the latest stable build of Google Chrome -- v24 -- and improves compatibility with Firefox 17 and newer builds, including the latest stable release. Other enhancements include better compatibility with Google Chrome extensions, improved Unicode text support and a new Burmese translation. The update is rounded off with the usual GUI tweaks and bug fixes.

The update follows hot on the heels of the release of Speccy 1.20.446, which adds a number of new features, including the ability to detect the versions of Internet Explorer, Java and Windows PowerShell. Speccy 1.20 also claims better detection of SSD and larger hard drives, plus improved anti-virus detection of server OSes.

Both CCleaner 3.27 and CCleaner 3.27 Portable, plus Speccy 1.20.446 and Speccy 1.20.446 Portable, are available now as freeware downloads for PCs running Windows XP or later.
