Have worked as a data recovery engineer quite a while and constantly had to recover passwords to Excel and Word documents. How difficult would it be to recover yours, strongly depends on which password type do you have on your file (password to open, modify etc.) and the version of Excel the file was saved in (you can easily find it out by checking at extension of the file - is it doc or docx?). If the latter, it means it was saved as Word 2007/2010 spreadsheet and since Microsoft has condsiderably enchanced the Office protection algorithms, it will be quite a headache to recover the lost pass. I know only one service that can instanly remove passwords from files with this extension (it's name is www.Password-find.com if you are interested in paying them for unprotecting your file), but it doesn't work for all files, so lenghty password recovery might be needed anyway. That's all I know, check it or some other service and please just be sure to store your passwords in password manager if you don't want to spend a fortune on recovering passwords to a really important file.
