myFix 2.0

Rather than bore you with several paragraphs describing everything in great detail I’m just going let the bullet points in the changelog do the talking for me. While myFix has been greatly improved and altered on a fundamental level, it is now much more integrated with myHack itself so I will be explaining the new features in more detail on the release notes for myHack 3.0 and in the myHack guide.

myHack 3.1.2 :simplest, most effective way to install Mac OS X on your PC.

Preface:

This guide is not intended as an all-inclusive how-to for running OS X on your PC. It focuses on how to get up and running with OS X quickly and easily utilizing the myHack application.

For questions not covered in this document, please join us in the Forum or on IRC.

Basic Requirements:

  • For Mountain Lion you will need the Install OS X Mountain Lion.app from the app store or the InstallESD.dmg from it.
  • For Lion you will need the Install OS X Lion.app from the app store or the InstallESD.dmg from it.
  • For Snow Leopard you will need a Snow Leopard Retail DVD or a DMG of it.
  • An External Hard Drive or Flash Drive w/ at least 8GB of space.
You will also need access to an x86 system (PPC is not supported) that is currently running OS X 10.6 or newer to prepare your installation device (this can be a real mac, a hackintosh, or an OS X virtual machine).

Note: An internal drive can be used as well but keep in mind any drive you use will have the chameleon bootloader installed on it – it is best to use a drive which is physically independent of your actual OS X installation. In the event that something goes horribly wrong with your actual OS X installation the myHack OS X install disk you have prepared will prove to be an invaluable tool with which you can repair your OS X installation and get it working again.

Hardware Requirements:

A system capable of running a “vanilla” OS X kernel… Including but not limited to the following:
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 *[1]
  • Motherboard: Intel chipset with AHCI enabled
  • At least 2GB of memory (4GB or more strongly recommended).
  • Most Nvidia 8xxx 9xxx 2xx 3xx 4xx 5xx 6xx graphics cards*[2].
  • Most ATI HD 5xxx/6xxx series graphics cards*[3].
  • HD3000/HD4000 Integrated Graphics*[4]
  • USB Keyboard and Mouse. (Apple keyboard recommended)*[5]
  • At least 40GB of internal hard disk space attached to Intel SATA controller running in AHCI mode.
  1. LGA 1155 chipsets (P55 for example) and Core i5 processors are only supported by the vanilla kernel on OS X 10.6.2+. Core i3 processors are only supported by the vanilla kernel on OS X 10.6.5+. “Sandy Bridge” intel processors are only supported by the vanilla kernel on OS X 10.6.8+ and work better in Lion and Mountain Lion. LGA2011 chipsets with “Sandy Bridge-E” processors are only supported by the vanilla kernel on OS X 10.7.3+. “Ivy Bridge” processors are supported by the vanilla kernel on OS X 10.8.0+.
  2. Some people with Nvidia cards still have issues using Graphics Enabler, particularly users on “GTS” models of these cards. The 5xx and 6xx series has only begun to really work properly with in OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. nVidia has the slight edge over ATI currently because nVidia released drivers for Mac Pro users. The further back you go in OS X versions, the fewer of the cards I listed will work.
  3. Most reference design HD 5xxx and 6xxxx ATI graphics cards will work oob on Lion and Snow Leopard but on Snow Leopard you will need to install the ATI kexts from the 10.6.7 MBP update. The 69xx series ATI graphics cards appear to be working on ML, but they did not work on Snow Leopard or Lion, although a future update may add support.
  4. To get HD3000/HD4000 IGPU working may require the use of an smbios.plist from a mac model that has one of these devices, in addition to GraphicsEnabler and/or a DSDT modification. Note: HD4000 will only work in ML  and HD3000 will only work in Lion/ML.
  5. If your graphics does NOT work out of the box or with chameleon’s GraphicsEnabler one of the best resources for more information on graphics card support for OS X is netkas’ blog. Also feel free to ask on the Forum or IRC.
  6. Most PC notebooks have their keyboard and touchpad wired internally to ps2. Even brand new 2012 sandy bridge based notebooks still use ps2… It really is amazing that this decades old technology is still hanging on. You can usually get ps2 HID’s working by using AppleACPIPS2Nub.kext+ApplePS2Controller.kext (these are now included in the Generic Extra supplied with myHack 3+). Some other users are not so lucky and will need to resort to other solutions.

Section 1: Installation

Step 1 – Create OS X 10.6, 10.7 or 10.8 Installer

Make sure that the internal/external stick/drive that you will be creating the OS X installer on is mounted and it has an empty HFS+ formatted partition of at least 8GB in size on it. You can partition and format it using Disk Utility, under Applications/Utilities. The partition scheme may be either “GUID Partition Table” (GPT) or “Master Boot Record” (MBR).

If you are creating a Snow Leopard installer make sure that you have inserted the retail DVD or mounted the dmg image of it prior to proceeding.

If you are creating a Lion or Mountain Lion installer make sure that you have downloaded the Install OS X (Mountain) Lion.app from the app store and have it, or the InstallESD.dmg from it, somewhere on your filesystem.

If you haven’t already done so, download the myHack dmg (the link is above in the basic requirements section). Mount it and drag the myHack app to Applications to install it or double click to run from the dmg itself.

Run the myHack.app, myHack will ask you to enter your administrative password, enter your password and proceed to the next step, the password will only be stored in your system memory it is not recorded, stored, or transmitted anywhere.

Note: if the user account you are running myHack on does not have authorization to use “sudo” you will need to logout and run again from an authorized administrative account with access to the “sudo” command.

Select your install type –  Create OS X Installer > Create OS X 10.8 Install Disk, Create OS X 10.7 Install Disk, or Create OS X 10.6 Install Disk for Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard respectively.

Select the target volume – this should be the internal/external stick/drive that you will be creating the OS X installer on.

myHack will now attempt to locate the installation source. If this is for a Snow Leopard installer it will look under /Volumes/ for a Snow Leopard install DVD or mounted dmg – if this is for a Mountain Lion or a Lion Installer it will prompt you if you want to have myHack attempt to locate it for you or browse manually (I suggest using browse only if search does not locate it) – if you choose to browse it will accept the location of Install OS X (Mountain) Lion.app or InstallESD.dmg.

myHack will then prompt you to warn you that all data on the target you selected will be erased. Once you press ok it will ERASE all data on the target volume you selected and copy the OS X installation files to it.

Note: If the file copy progress appears to be stalled, don’t worry, the progress bar can only calculate based on files completely transferred – large files may take a while to completely transfer to the destination prior to the progress being reported. Also if it appears to be transferring slowly, remember that the speed of transfers will be limited only by the speed of the device – some USB sticks and SD cards are very slow.

After all files have been transferred it will automatically install Chameleon, myHack utilities, a Generic Extra, and make all necessary modifications to the installer.

That is it, assuming you followed the steps correctly (the app is rather foolproof, assuming you have read and followed these simple instructions) you may now reboot, select the device that contains the myHack OS X Install Disk at your bios boot prompt, and boot to your installer!

Wasn’t that easy?

Step 2 – BIOS Setup

This is just a quick/general checklist, if you can not find these values in your bios ignore them for the time being unless you run into a problem:
  • Ensure you have your SATA controllers in AHCI mode.
  • Ensure you have enabled your CPU’s C states.
  • Ensure you have HPET set to 64bit.
  • Disable any devices you do not intend to use (extra SATA, Firewire, etc).
  • If you have a UEFI system, ensure that you boot in legacy (bios boot) mode.

Step 3 – OS X Installation

Assuming everything is configured properly for your system you should be able to boot to your USB device and be greeted by the OS X installer.

This part is just like any typical OS X Installation, click on the language you want to use, go to the utilities menu, open disk utility, partition and/or erase the device you want to install OS X on, exit disk utility and then proceed with the OS X installation.

Note: If you can not select your drives or you see nothing but the USB drive, go into your bios and ensure that your SATA device is running in AHCI mode. Alternatively you can try to install an IOATAFamily.kext as it will allow many systems to access SATA (and even some PATA) devices without the need for AHCI but it is not recommended.

In the last two minutes or so of the OS X installation a series of growl-like notifications and dialogs will prompt you. This is myHack running it’s post installation functions.

myHack will prompt you if you would like to install the generic Extra & Extensions bundled with myHack or if you would like to supply your own. Using your own is particularly useful if you already have a finely tuned OS X installation – you can simply provide the Extra of your choosing and it will migrate it properly for you. The generic bundle will boot most vanilla systems perfectly, but does NOT contain any extensions for audio/ethernet/acpi/ata/etc or dangerous DSDT “auto patchers”.

After installation completes you should be ready to reboot your system without using the myHack OS X Install Disk.

Reboot the system with the internal drive that you just installed OS X on.

Congratulations, If all went well you now have a functional OS X operating system running on your system!

Step 4 – First Boot

Go ahead and go through the initial OS X configuration, I tend to advise against using migration assistant, unless you are absolutely certain it was a completely clean installation. There are a number of reasons for this that I may write about later.

Step 5 – Post Install

This is the section where I used to have instructions on running tools within myHack for post installation, but now that it’s done during OS X installation about the only thing to say here is this is where you begin your journey (if you did not already have a perfectly tuned extra for your system) and find the extensions you need to get the rest of your system working perfectly.

For help in this portion of your journey, I suggest you join us in the Forum or on IRC.

Important Note for OS X  10.7+ and OS X 10.8 Installs: If you do not have an smbios.plist in /Extra/ made for your system, based on the mac model which your system most closely resembles, several things will not function correctly (Appstore/Facetime/iCloud /Intel HD Graphics/etc for example) and the system may not boot at all (You may receive a kernel panic related to ApplePolicyControl if you have not removed it). The solution is to create an smbios.plist for your system and place it in /Extra/ – if you need help figuring out how to create one feel free to ask in the Forum or on IRC.

Section 2: Basic Troubleshooting

What I am placing here is primarily for common issues faced when booting OS X Installers or first boot of an installed OS X system using the Generic Extra bundled with myHack. It does not cover the many issued that can be faced during post installation when using additional Extras. For help with problems not covered here I suggest you join us in the Forum or on IRC.

When I say “Boot with ____” it means to type in those flags at the chameleon boot prompt and press enter. You will see the chameleon boot menu and prompt by pressing any key at the first chameleon screen you see.
  • Symptom: The system fails to boot but I don’t know why
  • Resolution: Boot with -v and watch carefully to determine at which point the system is failing
  • Note: When trying any of the suggestions below it is best to add the -v flag each time until the system is booting correctly, this is the most used of all boot flags.
  • Symptom: The display goes blank or system reboots instantly after booting OS X or Installer
  • Resolution 1: Boot with PciRoot=1
  • Resolution 2: Boot with GraphicsEnabler=No (Only use if resolution 1 fails, will not work on ML unless you have one of the graphics devices which will provide hardware acceleration without GraphicsEnabler, or you have removed system extensions in order to force VESA mode).
  • Note: ML will not boot without graphics support as there is no longer VESA support. You will have to either replace your graphics card or find a method to get it working if it is not supported by GraphicsEnabler
  • Symptom: System hangs at “PCI configuration (begin/changed/end)”
  • Resolution: Boot with npci=0×2000 or npci=0×3000
  • Note: If neither of the above boot flags help you with this problem you will need to install a patched IOPCIFamily.kext, simply place in /Extra/Extensions/ and run myFix. You can obtain the latest patched IOPCIFamily.kext from netkas HERE.
  • Symptom: System fails to boot or runs extremely slowly with mouse jumping around
  • Resolution: Boot with cpus=1
  • Symptom: Booting from USB drive the boot process stops at ”EHCI unable to take control from BIOS”, “Still waiting for root device”, or anything else EHCI/UHCI related
  • Resolution: Boot with USBBusFix=Yes
  • Symptom: Booting internal drive the boot process stops at “Still waiting for root device”
  • Resolution: Ensure SATA devices are configured to run in AHCI mode in your system bios
  • Symptom: None of your internal drives are listed in the OS X installation app
  • Resolution: Ensure SATA devices are configured to run in AHCI mode in your system bios

Section 3: Software Updates

Generally speaking with vanilla OS X installs you can use software update without much concern. The updates you should avoid to install through software update are the “10.X.x Updates” which will contain a full revision # (10.6.1, 10.6.2, etc). I will make a post in the FAQ section of the forum with what we know about each software update as it becomes available and what benefits/potential problems will result from installing it. It is important that you do not install these updates until you have researched and ensured your system will not be negatively impacted by them.

A few general notes that are true of all updates:

Always backup your system prior to running an update, if you don’t want to create a complete system backup at the very minimum backup all the files in /System/Library/Extensions and /Extra to your USB Installer or other convenient location and ensure that the USB Installer is functioning correctly (it boots and you can use the terminal on it) prior to running the update. This is critical in case something goes wrong, a bootable installer will enable you to fix the problem from the installer’s terminal app (available under the utilities menu) without having to completely format and reinstall your OS or use a separate machine/operating system to attempt to repair it.

After you have successfully booted  and logged into a freshly updated system, wait a few minutes for the system to finish background processes and become idle, then run myFix. Running myFix will ensure that everything is tuned properly and that the system caches are happy. This may not be necessary, but if you have noticed after a few boots that it is still taking “longer than normal” to boot and get to the login screen that is a sign that something isn’t right in your kextd/kextcache/kernelcache/system cache. Running myFix should correct it.

If you get a kernel panic during reboot, the first thing you should try is booting to your USB Installer, opening the terminal and running myFix, sometimes kextd doesn’t properly rebuild your system caches after an update. If you still receive a kernel panic on reboot, boot in -v (verbose) mode and see if you can narrow it down to a suspect kext, the SleepEnabler.kext in /E/E has been a notorious source of these issues after a kernel update. If you can figure out the kext that is causing the problem you can move it out of /S/L/E or /E/E and then run myFix from the USB Installer – this will prevent it from loading. If that still doesn’t work you may need to replace the suspected kext with a newer or older version of it from a fresh download or a backup you have.

If you follow these few general notes you should seldom have a problem, and even if you do, you should be able to fix it quickly and easily.

Install OS X Snow Leopard from a USB flash drive

The steps below will guide you through how to Install OS X Snow Leopard from a USB Flash Drive. Alternatively, you can also read these instructions on how to install OS X Lion from a USB Flash Drive.
Apple officially released Snow Leopard a couple years ago and consumers can still find the latest version of OS X at Apple Stores and resellers across the country.
At version 10.6, Snow Leopard, focused more on improving speed and performance than adding new features to OS X. With the operating system available to customers, individuals are ready for their upgrades.

Installing OS X From a USB Drive


    • Open Disk Utility and select the Flash Drive
    • Select the Erase tab on the right and then set Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Name the partition you’ll be creating Snow Leopard or OS X Install so you can keep track of your installation device. After you’ve done this, click the Erase button.


      • After Disk Utility finishes erasing your old data on the flash drive and setting it as a new partition, it will be ready for the Snow Leopard install files. Select the Restore tab at the top and then drag the Snow Leopard DVD to the Source field. Select your USB device for the Destination file. Click Restore and wait for the restoration to finish (about 20 minutes).


        • If the restoration worked correctly you should be able to open your USB device and see the Leopard installation files. If you try and click the Install OS X Snow Leopard icon, you’ll get the message below telling you you can’ install OS X from this volume. IGNORE the message. The next steps will walk you through the installation steps.

        • Now that the installation files are successfully on your USB device, be sure to remove the Snow Leopard installation DVD from your drive. Next, restart your Mac and when it first starts to reboot, be sure to hold down the option (alt) key on your keyboard. After a few seconds at least two volumes should appear for you to select from for installation. One of those will be the USB drive we just prepared. Select it.
        • After the Snow Leopard installation software boots from your USB drive, follow the on screen instructions for installation. It took about 38 minutes to install Snow Leopard on my machine from the USB drive. I’m curious to see how this compares to the average Mac users, please leave a post in the comments letting us know how long it took on your machine.
        • After the installation finishes, it will reboot your computer into your new upgraded version of OS X, version 10.6 Snow Leopard



          • Like other versions of OS X, Snow Leopard can be installed from a USB drive. This is especially beneficial to Macbook Air users looking to install the OS without a DVD drive. To do this, you’ll need to prepare your USB drive with the installation files. Like many of our other Mac Help articles, the steps listed below worked particularly for Snow Leopard but should also work for installing OS X from USB on Leopard.
          • The installation files sit at 6.2gb on the Snow Leopard DVD, so you’ll probably need a drive that has at least 8gb available. If you want your installation files to last against the elements, check out this 8 GB Water/Shock Resistant USB flash drive.
          • After you’ve gotten the correct USB device, connect it to your Mac and prepare it with the Snow Leopard installation files by following these steps:
          NOTE:

          • Depending on your flash drive, you may need to follow steps 5 – 7 on installing onto a USB drive to make sure the drive is bootable before you get start. This includes updating the options for the partition so that it is set to a GUID partition. If the USB drive is not bootable you willNOT be able to install from it.
          • This method works for installing OS X Snow Leopard onto a Mac from a USB Drive. It should also work for installing Leopard or other older versions of OS X on Intel Based Macs. Check back often for additional help and tips for your Mac.

          ReInstalling OS X on Macbook Air

          When Apple released the Macbook Air many questioned their belief that many people no longer need a CD or DVD drive on their notebooks. While others focused on the notebooks lack of ability to quickly play DVD media or import the latest audio CD tracks, I was more concerned with how the notebook would handle the times it needs a fresh OS install.

          Apple did provide a custom external DVD drive that would make this process no different than any other notebook but I was interested in how they would handle the approach for individuals like me that didn’t want to pay and extra $99 for the DVD drive.

          So, I recently undertook the challenge of reinstalling a fresh version of OS X on my Macbook Air without an external DVD drive.

          Apple was successful in making the process simple, but there were a few hiccups along the way. The following details include instructions on how to install OS X on a Macbook Air without an external DVD drive. I’ll discuss the problems I came across at the corresponding step.

          How To Reinstall OS X on a Macbook Air Without a DVD Drive

          First thing you need to do before you attempt to reinstall OS X is to setup another computer on your network to share their DVD drive with the Macbook Air. Many of you may have done this when you first setup your Macbook Air. After this has been setup you’ll need to insert the OS X disk into the DVD drive and if you’re using a Windows Computer select Remote install OS X or navigate to /Applications/Utilities/ and
          launch the Remote Install OS X application.


          After the application has launched click continue to prepare for the installation.


          You’ll next need to select the OS X drive that you previously inserted into your DVD drive on the other computer.



          Select if you’d like to connect your computers through an Ethernet setup or over AirPort. If you do not have an Ethernet USB adapter for the Macbook Air you’ll have to select AirPort. The next steps get a bit more complicated.


          Now that you’ve returned to your Macbook Air, reboot the system and hold down Option until you see a screen that lets you select the boot drive.


          You’ll notice on the screen that you can select the network you’d like to join. You must select the same network that your other computer is on. I could not connect to my wireless network at first but after some trouble shooting I managed to connect the Macbook Air to my home network from the boot screen. I had to disable WEP and any other wireless security encryption before the Macbook Air would find the network.


          After I found and connected to the network, the OS X disk on my other computer appeared and was a boot option. Select it and continue.


          After selecting the DVD for boot the system will restart to that boot device. This may take some time.


          After the system starts you’ll select the language and installation settings (be sure to include the iLife if you would like that included on your Macbook Air) and then the install will begin. This will take a while. It took me close to 4 hours before the installation completed. Obviously this is related to the data transfer limits of a wireless network. If you’re short on time, you may want to look into setting up a USB device that you can install OS X 10.5 from.

          The Macbook Air may reboot once or twice during the install and ask for the 2nd DVD if you select to install iLife at this time. Once over thing is complete the computer will restart and be just the way it was when you first purchased it.

          Conclusion

          While the reinstallation process would be considerably shorter if a DVD drive was somehow included on the Macbook Air, the computer is still capable of easily walking a user through formatting and reinstalling OS X on the notebook. The major difficulties people will have is with connecting to their wireless networks and keeping that connection through the 4 hour install period.

          A Snow Leopard Is Coming!

          Shortly after releasing OS X 10.5 Leopard, Apple announced that their next new Operating System was under development. Titled Snow Leopard, the next version of OS X would not be focused on adding a ton of new features to the Operating System but would focus more on increasing its core services, reducing its size, and increasing its speed.

          After over a year of development, Apple announced that Snow Leopard was coming to market. Soon to be available to Apple computer owners will be the 10.6 version of their Operating System. And while the new OS appears to meet the goals set out for the upgrade, it seems that the most impressive part is the Price for the OS.

          Snow Leopard Pricing

          • Previous versions of Apple’s OS X often cost near a hundred dollars for a single license with a five license option being priced around $129. Apple has broken that model with Snow Leopard and are offering the OS at a much cheaper price.
          • For just $29 Intel Mac owners can purchase a license of Snow Leopard and upgrade their Operating System. Apple does offer a “Snow Leopard Up-To-Date Program” that allows some Mac owners to get the latest OS for even less. The price to upgrade for recent purchasers of Mac computers (Those who purchased a computer after June 8, 2009) is just $9.99.
          • For just $49.99 a 5 license Family Pack upgrade to OS X Snow Leopard is available.
          • While Apple is offering the Upgrade price at a low level, users who currently have the older 10.4 version of the OS will have to pay a higher price. Apple isn’t offering option to upgrade from 10.4 to 10.6 directly. Instead OS X 10.4 owners will have to purchase the Mac Box Set that includes Snow Leopard, iLife 09, and iWork 09.

          What’s New in OS X Snow Leopard

          • While the focus of OS X Snow Leopard wasn’t on new features, Apple didn’t walk away from the opportunity to improve the functionality of their operating system.
          • New features include an upgrade to Expose and the Dock. Allowing you to easily switch from active applications, windows, and tasks to get more done faster on your Mac.
          • Additionally, Apple has speed up the backup process with Time Machine. This makes it easier to backup your system for the first time and worry less about the process consuming system resources moving forward.
          • QuickTime also received a significant upgrade. QuickTime X is now the power behind audio and video in Snow Leopard. This next-gen upgrade to QuickTime allows OS X to continue to push forward in media related capabilities. One powerful and desired upgrade to Quicktime is the capability to quick and easily share videos either through MobileMe or Youtube.
          • iChat received an upgrade and now includes higher resolution chats. The best feature of the upgrades to iChat is that you now need less bandwidth to carry on a conversation with your friends and familiy.
          • Snow Leopard also includes Microsoft Exchange Support. This new feature makes your Mac even more ready for the business environment. Mail, iCal, and Address Book will all now come with the capability to sync with your Microsoft Exchange servers and sync your latest business emails, calendars, and business contacts.
          • One of the less hyped, but full necessary upgrade to the operating system, is the improvement to disk eject capabilities. Too often, the ability to eject DVDs or other media did not work in previous versions of OS X. Snow Leopard looks to correct that and the reliability of disk eject.

          Snow Leopard Security

          • Like previous versions of OS X, Snow Leopard comes with some of the best security features including the OS X Firewall. While Macs aren’t virus free, they don’t get the same viruses your friends and family worry about on their Windows computers. Additionally, Apple has implemented a number of security methods into their OS to ensure the computer stays free from computer programs that look to take over or hard your computing experience.
          • OS X Snow Leopard stays up to date automatically. It periodically prompts you when system updates are made available for all of the core features of the OS as well as a number of upgrades to other programs including those in iLife.
          • Parental Control features on your Mac are also available in Snow Leopard that can help you control the computer experience of your children. The features included in Snow Leopard Parental Controls are similar to previous OS versions.

          System Requirements for Snow Leopard

          As mentioned earlier, Snow Leopard is for Intel based Mac users. The latest OS will not work on PPC versions of Mac computers.

          Additional system requirements include:

          • 1gb of Memory
          • 5GB disk space
          • DVD drive
          • Internet Connection

          Conclusion

          • Overall, the upgrade looks to considerable improve the speed and core functionality of the Apple OS. Faster Boot speeds, quicker to open applications, as well as the ability to gain back some of the disk space your hard drive was taken up makes Snow Leopard a viable OS upgrade for all Mac users.

          Snow Leopard Parental Controls

          As the internet continues to retain its Wild Wild West characteristics where individuals find ways of posting content that many feel is only appropriate for adults, Parents will continually look for ways to control what their children have access to while browsing the web.

          We’ve discussed previously how the Macintosh Operating Systems have built in Parental Controls to help protect children from stumbling across content parents don’t want them to see. This is no different with Apple’s most recent OS, Snow Leopard.

          Like the previous versions, Snow Leopard allows parents to create individual accounts for their children and then limit the applications they can use, files they have access to, and websites they can visit. Parental Controls can be configured from System Preferences

          Manage Parental Controls from another Computer

          One of the newer features in Snow Leopard Parental controls is the ability manage parental controls from other computers. After you’ve entered in your administrative password, you can check the option so that you can control access to accounts on other computers all from one Mac in your home.

          System Parental Controls

          After you’ve created user accounts for your children, you can set system controls for your child’s account with Snow Leopard’s Parental Control features. In Parental Controls, select the user account and then the system tab.


          From here you can simplify the Finder interface, and limit the applications your child has access to. If you don’t want your child messing with Printer settings be sure to uncheck the Can administer Printers box.

          Macintosh Web Content Parental Controls

          The content tab of parental controls allows you to block profanity or inappropriate content from dictionaries and thesauruses on Snow Leopard.


          It also allows you to restrict website access. You can either setup Snow Leopard to limit adult website access automatically, or be more restrictive and setup the account to be only able to access sites you’re comfortable with. This option may be best for controlling internet access for smaller children who may click into a site you don’t want them accessing.

          Protect Against People

          The internet has become a great communications tool. Unfortunately it doesn’t have anyway to automatically keep people away from your children’s email or instant messages. Snow Leopard Parental Control features allow you to limit access to email, and limit iChat communications to only people you’ve approved.


          Additionally, permission requests can be sent to you to approve an email communication with someone you haven’t approved.

          Time Limits with Snow Leopard

          Sometimes your children will spend too much time on the computer and/or internet. Snow Leopard parental controls has built in capabilities to limit the amount of time and when your child has access to the computer.


          This includes setting time limits for school days, weekends, and at what time of night their access is turned off. You won’t have to worry about fighting for “5 more minutes” on the computer at bed time because Snow Leopard will just shut off your child’s account at that time.

          Review Your Child’s Computer Activities

          Snow Leopard Parental Controls also record the activities your child takes on the Macintosh. It stores these in logs that are accessible to administrators so that you can see what and when they’ve been doing on the computer. Find out who they’ve been talking to and what they’ve been saying while communicating on the internet.


          Conclusion

          Like previous versions of Apple’s OS, Snow Leopard includes Parental Control features to help you protect your child from undesired information and content available on the internet.

          Be sure to setup their accounts the way you feel best so that they can be productive, but also safe from the dangers found on the internet.

          Parental Controls On Your Mac

          As the internet remains a Wild West of content where users are free to “stumble upon” content areas of many different classes and computer tasks are continually being moved to internet based platforms, more and more parents are interested in locking down the computer experience of their children.

          Included in Mac OS X Leopard are Parental Controls that will allow you to keep track of what applications your children can use, how they view the desktop and finder, the websites they can or can not visit, as well as who they can email and instant message.

          These controls provide a sense of security for parents that are worried about what their children may “digg” up while learning new ideas on the computer.

          To setup Parental Controls on OS X Leopard:
          • Open System Preferences and then select Accounts

          • Next, unlock the settings so that you can make changes by clicking the Lock in the lower left corner, enter your password to confirm the unlock request

          • Select the user account on the left navigation for the account you’d like to apply Parental Controls. If you haven’t already setup an account for the user you’d like to restrict, you can also do that from the Accounts section of System Preferences
          • Once the account is selected select Open Parental Controls

          • Now that the Parental Controls option is open, you can select the System setup you’d like available to the user. Simplify Finder, Limit availability of Applications, lock down the dock and creation of CDs, etc.

          The other tabs across the top will allow you to limit the content available to the user included what they view on the web, Mail & iChat will limit who they can talk to, and Time Limits will restrict access during certain times of day or limit the length of time they can compute and browse the web.

          Additionally, if you’re still concerned about what the user may be trying to get at, you can setup logs to report back on their computing behavior.

          Install & Boot OS X Leopard from a USB Flash Drive

          Update: You can now find instructions on how to install OS X Snow Leopard from a USB Drive at Maciverse.
          If you’re one of those people that continually adjust system settings, make changes in terminal, and try new and experimental software then you’ve probably done something in the past to your OS X installation that has compromised performance or made things stop working completely.
          On the other hand, you may have installed the latest updates to OS X and various programs just stopped working. If either of these sound like you, you may find it handy to have a back up OS X 10.5 Leopard install that you can boot to and make adjustments to your system.
          Installing OS X Leopard on a USB Flash Drive is much easier than expected. In fact it is almost the exact same experience you had when installing the device on your Mac originally. For a complete install you’ll need at least an 8gb Flash drive or a larger external USB Hard Drive.

          To install OS X Leopard 10.5 follow these steps:


          • Insert the OS X 10.5 Leopard DVD into your Mac
          • Open system preferences, start up disks, and restart into the OS X 10.5 Leopard DVD
          • Once your computer restarts into OS X Leopard, continue through the introduction and agreement pages that will be displayed until you get to the screen that asks you to select your installation Volume.
          • You can’t yet select your USB Flash drive, so select Utility from the menu bar and open Disk Utility

          • From here select 1 Partition and then click Options

          • Select GUID Partition Table so that our computer can boot from the device

          • Name the Volume and click Apply.
          • Close out Disk Utility and return to the Volume selection screen. Select your Volume and continue the OS X 10.5 Installation.
          • If you’re installing on an 8gb Flash Drive you’ll need to be sure to customize the installation and remove any printer drivers, language and fonts, and anything else so you can reduce your install to fit on the device itself.

          Now that you’ve installed OS X 10.5 on your Flash Drive, it should boot up to the device anytime you select it from System Preference >> Start up Disks.
          From my experience running OS X 10.5 on a USB Flash Drive always runs a bit slow at first but performance increases significantly after 10 minutes or so.

          If you don’t have a large enough USB Drive, the SanDisk Cruzer Micro 16 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive was what I used and worked perfectly as a Bootable OS X Leopard drive.

          How to Install OS X Mountain Lion from a Single-Layer DVD



          I just downloaded Apple’s newest version of OS X, Mountain Lion. The only way to get Mountain Lion is through the Apple Mac App Store. When you buy it, the installer is saved to your Applications folder. I find it useful to have a physical DVD to install from since it includes the Disk Utility and I like to do a permissions check on my system before I upgrade.
          The installer image that you download contains 4.3GB of files on a 4.8GB disk image. The OS X Disk Utility can’t burn a 4.8GB image onto a 4.7GB single-layer DVD, so to be able to use a single-layer DVD, we must copy the files into a disk image that is sized correctly. The steps below outline how to do this.
          To install Mountain Lion from a DVD, you first have to download the installer application from the Mac App Store. After it’s finished downloading, follow these steps:
          1. Open the Finder and go to your Applications folder.
          2. Right click on the file called “Install OS X Mountain Lion” and click “Show Package Contents”.
          3. Go to Contents/SharedSupport then right click on InstallESD.dmg and select Copy.
          4. In the Finder, go to your home directory and paste the InstallESD.dmg file. This is the installation image with Mountain Lion on it.
          5. After it is finished copying, double click on it to mount the image.
          6. Next, open the Disk Utility from Applications > Utilities.
          7. In Disk Utility, go to File > New > Blank Disk Image.
          8. In the options select:
            - Save As: Mountain Lion Install DVD
            - Size: 4.6GB
            - Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
            - Image Format: read/write disk image
            - Partitions: Single Partition – Apple Partition Map
            - Name: Mountain Lion Install DVD
            - Then click create.
          9. After the image is created, it will be mounted.
          10. Next, open the Terminal and run:
            cp -Rvp "/Volumes/Mac OS X Install ESD"/* "/Volumes/Mountain Lion Install DVD"/
          11. This command will copy the installation files onto the new image you created.
          12. Once, the copy is complete, go back to Disk Utility and eject both disk images that were mounted.
          13. Insert your single-layer DVD into your super-drive and select the disk image titled “Mountain Lion Install DVD” and click Burn.
          14. After the burning process is complete, reinsert the disk into the super-drive and reboot your computer.
          15. While it’s booting hold down the Option key to select the installer DVD to boot from and follow the installation instructions on the screen.
          After all that, you should now be happily running OS X Mountain Lion. If you’re like me, before running the setup choose Disk Utility from the tools menu and do a permissions check on your disk.

          How To Create an OS X Lion USB Installation Drive

          Yesterday, during Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference, Apple announced they were moving forward with the way they distributed software to their customers. No longer will you be able to buy the latest and greatest software from Apple on DVDs or other media. Starting with OS X Lion, the only way to get new software will be to download and install it through the Mac App store.

          Fortunately, it does not appear that Apple has limited our ability to create our own installation media. In fact, it is still very easy to create a USB installation disk for OS X Lion. Below you will find the steps I used to install the developers preview of OS X Lion via a USB disk.
          These steps worked with the developer preview downloads for OS X Lion that was distributed through the Mac App Store to developers. It has not been tested with the retail version of OS X Lion, but we will test this approach as soon as the software is available in its retail form.

          How To Create an OS X Lion USB Installation Drive

          1. Download Lion through the App Store
          2. Find the downloaded App package in Finder, right or control click it and select “Show Package Contents”

          3. In the Finder window displaying the package contents select the Contents folder, then the SharedSupport folder. Find the InstallESD.dmg file. You will need this file to create the USB drive.
          4. Plugin your USB Drive, for this effort I used a 8gb USB drive, and open Disk Utility
          5. In Disk Utility, prepare the USB drive to be bootable. Select the drive in Disk Utility and then thePartition Tab.

          6. Under Volume Scheme select 1 Partition and then Options

          7. Select GUID Partition Table and press OK. Apply the changes.

          8. When the USB Drive has been reformatted to a GUID partition select the Restore Tab
          9. For Source, drag and drop the installESD.dmg file into the source location. For Destination drag and drop the newly configured USB drive. Click Restore and Enter in your Password.

          10. Reboot your Mac, holding down Option until the Boot Option screen appears. Select the OS X Lion USB Drive you just created.

          It is great to see Apple moving more and more towards online software distribution, there still remains instances when consumers would like to install drives from physical media. Especially if one would like to install OS X Lion when not already running Snow Leopard.
